| No matter what country you're from, you can legally do the WWOOF thing here at Ocean Island without a work permit. Depending on which country you're coming from, you may need a traveling visa to come into Canada. Check out the Canadian Government's regulations about it.
The WWOOF organization brings people who are looking for organic farming experience together with organic farms looking for workers. Typically a person works for their stay and food, and most of the host organizations are organic farms. But recently WWOOF has been setting up connections with organizations in cities, so that WWOOFers can do their thing while traveling, even in cities.
So that's how we came to be a WWOOF host. We've been selling WWOOF memberships for years, and now we're one of the places where you can use your WWOOF membership.
What you can do for us:
You can do various types of work for us:
- Housekeeping (including laundry and cleaning)
- Painting, construction etc.
- Translation for our web site and other written materials.
- Helping guests out at the front desk.
- Computer stuff.
- Art, design, music etc.
- Let us know of any other skills you possess - we might be able to use them!
The amount of work you do depends on the type of work you're doing, but it's generally about 6 hrs a day, 5 days a week.
What we can do for you:
The following is for housekeeping. For painting, construction and some other kinds of skilled work, we may be able to offer you more (private room in winter, cash).
- Accommodation in one of our dorms (we have men's, women's and co-ed), or possibly a private room (in the winter, depending on what type of work you're doing and the length of your stay).
- In addition, each day you will receive $15 food credit (enough for 3 small meals) and $5 general credit (internet, drinks, laundry, etc.).
If you want to do the WWOOF thing with us, it's best to e-mail us in advance so we can make arrangements, but you can also show up, and we may or may not have work for you to do. Unless you do arrange something with us in advance, you'll probably need to stay a night anyway, before starting to work for your stay, so be prepared for that.
Check out the WWOOF Canada site for more information about WWOOF, or if you're interesting in WWOOFing at Ocean Island, contact us.
Not a WWOOF member?
We can sell you a membership right here, or if you're not interested in being a WWOOF member, we might be able to work out a different arrangement.
