But the harbour is really just the starting point. Get yourself out on the water, and Victoria becomes something else entirely.
Whale Watching: The Real Deal
Honestly, if you're visiting Victoria and you skip the whale watching, I will be personally disappointed in you. The waters around southern Vancouver Island are home to resident and transient orca pods, humpback whales, Dall's porpoises, harbour seals and bald eagles — often all in the same afternoon.

- Zodiac tours — for the people who want to *feel* it. Fast, open-air, spray-in-your-face exhilarating. The wildlife experience is just as good; the ride is just wilder.
Both tour types leave from two different docks near the Inner Harbour — and which dock you head to depends on which vessel you're booked on. Ask at the Ocean Island front desk to confirm your departure point before you walk out the door. Easy detail to miss, annoying to get wrong.
When to Go
Tours run roughly April through October, with summer being peak season for orca activity and calm water. That said, humpbacks have been showing up more frequently in shoulder months too — spring and early fall trips can be magical and far less crowded.
Plan for around three hours on the water. Dress in layers even in summer — it's always cooler out on the Strait.

What to See Along the Waterfront

- The Empress Hotel — iconic, grand, and worth a look even if you're not staying there. The lobby alone is a vibe.
- Fisherman's Wharf — a ten-minute walk or a short harbour ferry ride from the main waterfront. Floating homes, seals begging for fish, and a row of food shacks serving fresh seafood. Don't miss it.
- Street performers and buskers — in summer especially, the harbour walkway becomes its own little show. Fire jugglers, musicians, living statues — the works.
Getting Around the Harbour
Everything along the Inner Harbour is very walkable from Ocean Island. The Victoria Harbour Ferry (those little round boats that putter around the harbour) is a fun and practical way to hop between spots — check their current schedule and routes at victoriaharbourferry.com.
If you'd rather stay on foot, the flat waterfront path connects the main harbour all the way down toward Fisherman's Wharf on one side and the Royal BC Museum on the other — both worth your time.
Before You Head Out
A few practical things worth knowing:
- Sunscreen and sunglasses — the harbour and open water reflect a lot of UV. Don't find out the hard way.
- Camera with zoom — or just use your phone. Whales are big, but a little zoom never hurts.
- Arrive early for your tour — find your dock, get oriented, grab a coffee from one of the cafés nearby. No rushing.
- Motion sensitivity — if you get seasick, mention it when booking. The covered vessel may suit you better than the Zodiac.
