Victoria is one of those cities that looks great in photos and somehow manages to be even better in person — and a surprising amount of what makes it great costs nothing at all.
Whether you've got two days or two weeks, here's what's actually worth your time.
Free and Almost-Free Victoria BC Activities
Walk or Bike the Galloping Goose Trail
This one's non-negotiable. The Galloping Goose is a converted rail trail that stretches well beyond the city — smooth, flat, and genuinely beautiful through the urban sections near Vic West and out toward Langford. You can pick it up easily from downtown. If you didn't bring a bike, rentals are available right at Ocean Island Inn — it's one of the easiest ways to cover serious ground without spending much.
Beacon Hill Park
Enormous, free, and a five-minute walk from the Inner Harbour. You'll find peacocks wandering around like they own the place (they sort of do), a petting zoo in the warmer months, and some of the best views of the Olympic Mountains across the water. Bring snacks and just wander.
Chinatown and Fan Tan Alley
Victoria's Chinatown is the oldest in Canada, and Fan Tan Alley — a narrow passageway connecting Fisgard Street to Pandora — is genuinely worth squeezing through. The neighbourhood has good cheap eats, interesting shops, and a lot of history packed into a small space. This is a five-minute walk from Ocean Island Inn, so you'll probably end up here more than once.
The Inner Harbour Seawall
Free, always open, and endlessly watchable. Floatplanes land and take off constantly, there are buskers most days in summer, and the whole scene has a low-key energy that's hard not to like. Grab a coffee and just walk it.
On-the-Water Activities in Victoria BC
Whale Watching
If you do one splurge in Victoria, this is probably the one. We partner with Orca Spirit Adventures for whale watching — their tours run roughly three hours and they operate both covered vessels (great if the weather turns) and Zodiacs (faster, wetter, more exciting). Tours depart from two different docks near the Inner Harbour, so ask at the Ocean Island front desk which dock your tour leaves from and about the guest discounts we can get you. Best months are April through October, though orca sightings happen year-round.
Kayaking the Harbour
A few operators run kayak tours out of the Inner Harbour and around Fisherman's Wharf — it's a solid way to see the harbour seals and get out on the water without a big commitment. Check tourismvictoria.com for current operators, or ask the front desk for recommendations.
Eating Well Without Overspending
Cook Street Village
About a twenty-minute walk from downtown (or a quick bus ride), Cook Street Village is where locals actually eat. You'll find good coffee, solid brunch spots, and a generally more relaxed vibe than the touristy bits around the harbour. Worth the walk.
Fisherman's Wharf
Yes, it's a tourist spot — but the fish and chips eaten on the dock while a harbour seal stares you down is a genuine Victoria experience. Look for the fish shacks right on the floating docks. It's a bit of a walk along the waterfront from downtown, or a short Harbour Ferry ride if you want to arrive in style.
Dim Sum in Chinatown
A few of the restaurants in and around the Chinatown neighbourhood do proper weekend dim sum. Get there early, point at things on the cart, eat a lot. It's one of the better-value meals in the city.
Getting Around
BC Transit covers the city pretty well. You can pay cash on board with exact change, or grab a day pass if you're planning to move around a lot. Check bctransit.com for current routes and fares — the front desk can also point you toward the most useful routes from downtown.
