Rooms for Rent in Victoria BC: Where to Look, Plus a Monthly Option

Rooms for Rent in Victoria BC: Where to Look, Plus a Monthly Option — abstract illustration

Searching for rooms for rent in Victoria BC can feel like a part-time job. I've been through it, and so have most of my friends here. The good news: rooms do come up all the time, and with the right approach you can find a good one. Here's how I'd do it, plus a simple monthly option if you need somewhere to stay in the meantime.

Where to look for rooms for rent in Victoria

There isn't one magic website. Most people find their room through a mix of these:

  • The big online classifieds and marketplace sites: this is where most private room listings show up. Set alerts and check them every day.
  • Local housing groups on social media: there are active groups for Victoria rentals and roommates. Posts move fast, so reply quickly and politely.
  • Student housing boards: the University of Victoria and Camosun College both keep off-campus housing resources. Great if you're studying, and sometimes useful even if you're not.
  • Word of mouth: tell everyone you meet that you're looking. In a city this size, a lot of rooms are rented to a friend of a friend.
  • Community notice boards: cafés, libraries and community centres still have them, especially in Fernwood, Cook Street Village and James Bay.

How to stand out to landlords

Victoria's rental market is competitive, so a little preparation goes a long way:

  • Write a short, friendly intro about yourself: why you're in Victoria, what you do, and your habits (quiet, tidy, non-smoking, whatever is true).
  • Have references ready from a past landlord, employer or school.
  • Be ready to view in person, often at short notice.
  • Know your budget and your move-in date before you start messaging.

Watch out for rental scams

This part matters. Scammers love tight rental markets. A few red flags:

  • The landlord is "out of the country" and can't show you the room.
  • You're asked to send a deposit before you've seen the place or signed anything.
  • The price is far below everything else in the area.
  • They push you to decide right now.

Never send money for a room you haven't seen, and if something feels off, walk away. This is one of the best reasons to be in Victoria while you search, rather than renting from far away.

Monthly rentals in Victoria BC: the flexible option

Not everyone wants to sign a long lease straight away. Maybe you're here for a semester, waiting for a job to start, or you just want to get to know the neighbourhoods first. That's where monthly rentals in Victoria BC come in.

Ocean Island offers furnished rooms by the month right downtown, from $595 a month for a dorm and from $625 a month for a private room. Monthly stays have no tax, and they run from October to May. Here's what's included:

  • A fully furnished room with linens, a fridge with freezer, and storage.
  • Free wifi everywhere in the building.
  • A fully equipped shared kitchen.
  • A 24-hour front desk, laundry and secure bag and bike storage.
  • Free coffee, tea and hot chocolate around the clock.

Most rooms share a bathroom, and optional monthly breakfast and dinner packages are available if you'd rather not cook every day. All room types and current rates are on our extended stay page.

A smart way to search

Here is the plan I recommend to friends moving here:

  • Book a furnished monthly room downtown so you have a stable base.
  • Spend the first couple of weeks exploring neighbourhoods by bus and bike.
  • View rooms in person and meet your future housemates.
  • Move into the right place without the pressure of a deadline.

Downtown is a great base for this, with buses heading to every neighbourhood and the regional bike trails starting just a short ride away.
