The Templeton
A retro 1950s-style diner with modern accoutrements (like movies on monday nights) and a super-modern menu. Nice staff, cool location, the Ferris' of Vancouver.

Cupcakes
With cupcakes like “Lava flow” (chocolate cake with a raspberry centre and cream cheese icing), and “With Envy” (pistachio cake with pistachio butter cream icing and a sprinkling of pistachios) who could resist? The answer is nobody -- even if they have to wait in line for twenty minutes on a Saturday and pay an exorbitant fee for these little pieces of heaven.
1116 Denman Street. (604) 974-1300.
Mondo Gelato
For years, Mondo Gelato has been a Vancouver staple (although as of 2001 it is also available in Beijing). This is probably the best Gelato in Vancouver -- a city known to love its Gelato. Mondo Gelato offers Gelato (Italian ice cream), Sorbetto (non-dairy, non-fat fruit ice cream), Soya Gelato (no sugar, no cholesterol) and Gelato-non-Gelato (chilled but not frozen).
1094 Denman Street, 1222 Robson Street. (604) 647-6638.
Nyala.
Remember in the Movie When Harry Met Sally when Harry makes that joke about Ethiopian restaurants: “They have food in Ethiopia?” the answer is yes. Yes, they have food in Ethiopia, and it’s so good that they brought it to Vancouver. Nyala describes their food as “combinations that make mouths happier than a tulip on a Sunny day”. So, use some injera to scoop up some Yesega Watt, and spend the evening eating with your hands. There is also a vegetarian buffet Sunday, Monday and Wednesday evenings.
2930 West 4th Ave. (604) 731-7899.
The Foundation.
So you’re a vegetarian, or maybe you just want to eat like one. Everyone is probably telling you to go to the Naam...but you want something cheaper, tastier, and much much more pretentious...so you go to The Foundation. The Foundation only hires cool people. Cool people with attitude. Cool people with attitude who have better things to do than tend to your every need. If service with a smile doesn’t matter to you as much as the sweet sweet taste of coconut mango pasta then the Foundation is really worth visiting. Try the appetizer platter, and the chili.
2301 Main St. (604) 708-0881.
The Locus.
The Locus is like a gothic swamp cave. But in a hip way. It draws in all the Main Street artistic types by featuring tasty fusion. All of the salads are good – actually, almost everything is good. Make sure to try the butter that comes with the breadbasket, and try the fruity ice tea that comes with a big bottle of liquid sugar.
4121 Main Street. (604) 708-4121.
Calhoun’s
A 24-hour bakery and cafe full of studying students and Kitsilano dwellers. Tasty snacks, soups and smoothies
3035WestBroadway. (604) 737-7062.
East is East
In the mood for rose water? Katmandu shakes? Dry roasted masala chicken? East is East serves delicious Afghan, Turkish, Indian and Middle Eastern dishes at reasonable prices.
3243 W. Broadway. (604) 734-5881.
The Elbow Room
So many options you just can’t decide, so waiter turns to your boyfriend and says “What’s wrong with her? Did you f--- her brains out last night?” (in the loudest voice possible). You quickly decide on the six inch pancake, which is a terrible mistake because the waiter is going to make “six inch” jokes and refer to the syrup as “lube” for the rest of your breakfast. When you can’t finish your meal (and you probably won’t be able to), you’re “forced” to make a donation to charity.
560 Davie St. (604) 685-3628.
The Crime Lab
I’ve never been but frankly that doesn’t matter because Jason Priestly owns this place. So it has to be good.
