Ocean Island Backpackers Inn is not just a short-term resting place for travelers. We also offer monthly accommodation for apartment seekers, students, new arrivals to Victoria, city dwellers and travelers who want to stick around for awhile. Ocean Island is a funky and unique downtown alternative to the sometimes-difficult Victoria apartment scene. One of the things that's attractive about staying here is that you don't have to have a plan months in advance - you can rent as you go!

We have a great range of rooms available to suit every taste and budget: from “suites” with their own bathroom or kitchenette, to miniature rooms inspired by Tokyo commuter hotels. The rooms range in price from $300 to $575 per month.

What do you get with your room?

• All rooms have hardwood floors and a fridge.
• Some rooms come with lockers, and there are lockers in the hallways to store your gear. Locks can be obtained from the Front Desk for a $5 deposit. Some of our rooms have closets as well.
• Some rooms have views of the Sooke Hills or Victoria's historic cityscape, some have drab views of our parking lot or the trees outside, and some are tucked quietly away from it all, without windows.
• Ceilings are approximately 8.5 feet high.
• Yes, we are a funky old heritage building in downtown Victoria, so be aware that this old building has a few grunts and groans as it ages.
• Life on the street is active. Noise levels can be an issue if you are a light sleeper. May we suggest our nifty ear plugs at 50 cents a pair? Ocean Island does have a noise policy, and we enforce it to ensure that our guests get their sleep.
• Monthly guests are also provided with linen--duvet, pillows, sheets. But you've got to wash them. You are free to supply your own linen if you desire.
• Heat and hot water (and Cable TV in some rooms) are all included in the rent.
• Wireless internet is available throughout the building. Ask at the Front Desk about how you can get hooked up.
• You are responsible for cleaning your own room and keeping those dust bunnies at bay by the time you check out.

Linen and Cleaning

We provide whatever linen you might need, including blankets, pillows, and sheets. But you've gotta wash them. They're clean when we give 'em to you of course. And towels can be rented for $1.

Sinks and Cupboards

Some of our rooms come with Sinks and Cupboards for storage space and such.

Furniture

All rooms come with a bed: either a futon, a bunk or a mattress, depending on the size of the room and your preference. We can also furnish you with tables, chairs, dressers and desks if you need them, if you're in a room that has space for them.

This section also has details on nightly, one week and two week rooms and dorms in case you need some extra accommodation before or after your monthly room.

Availability

We put out our rooms for rent on the 12th of each month for the following month. Check out our list of available monthly rooms.

Not all rooms are available year-round. The deal is, in the summer when all the backpackers come into town, we convert as many rooms into nightly accommodation as are necessary to accommodate these guests. One week, two week and monthly on-demand rates are available throughout the year, with a lot less paperwork and hassle than our booked-in-advance monthly rooms, but the prices are higher. October through April, there are always tons of monthly rooms available. That's no problem. Around April and May we start converting some monthly rooms into nightly rooms, so there are fewer monthly rooms available for rent. In June, July, August and September there are no monthly rooms available.
